Here at Redwood, we’re proud to employ some of the very latest, high tech seam welding equipment available for mattress manufacture, including ultrasonic welding and high frequency welding machines. But that doesn’t mean we have no room for traditional craftsmanship in mattress manufacture.

Sewing is still a fundamental part of everything we do here at Redwood, from crafting individual bespoke orders to large scale mattress manufacture for some of the best known names in both the retail and the medical sectors. In fact, you’d be surprised at exactly how much sewing we get done at our Skelmersdale manufacturing base.

Here’s just a few facts about Redwood’s sewing experience and expertise:

• Redwood’s seamstresses sewed their way through no less than 12 million metres of thread in 2024 alone. That’s enough thread to stretch from Skelmersdale to Hong Kong or Buenos Aires in Argentina.

• We use 1 million metres of sewing thread every month. That’s enough to sew your way from Land’s End to John-O-Groats - and still have 18 miles of thread to spare!

• Our team sewed for 4.5 million minutes, or 75,000 hours in 2024 – that’s the equivalent of one person sewing around the clock, non-stop, for eight and a half years! Now that would give you some serious blisters!

• Redwood doesn’t just use sewing in mattress manufacture. In fact, we created no less than 498 different sewn products in 2024. That’s like creating a different product every weekday for two whole years without ever repeating yourself.

• Our team of talented sewers extends to over fifty seamstresses, all working together in our 60,000 square foot factory in Skelmersdale. 

• Together, our sewing team have the capacity to produce over 15,000 items per week, which adds up to three quarters of a million sewn or stitched items per year.
